The Illegal Fishermen

I’ve been so inspired to work with The Outlaw Ocean Project because of their focus on ocean lawlessness, deceit and the urgent need for improved ocean governance. There are so many abuses occurring like illegal fishing and arms trafficking and my mural educates the people of Gambia about these topics.

Illegal fishing was one of the issues that stood out the most to me. It is a big problem in our society and art brings this and other pressing stories to life, allowing me to explore these themes on a profound level. I’d venture to say that this mural is the most powerful art I have ever painted. While I normally depict the daily lives of African people, this painting reached another level. It addressed more universal subject matter.

Through this project, journalists have amplified the work of artists and vice versa. It has been an honor to be a part of this impactful venture, which has educated multitudes about ocean crime all over the world. I'm so glad that I have painted something that will hopefully help improve the lives of many individuals across the planet. I greatly appreciate that The Outlaw Ocean Project has highlighted subjects that also specifically affect impoverished people in Africa.
